In 2024, central banks worldwide have purchased over 1,000 tons of gold for the third consecutive year, but why is Sweden’s Riksbank maintaining its current gold reserves?
According to the World Gold Council, central banks collectively added 1,045 tons of gold to their reserves in 2024, marking the third consecutive year of purchases exceeding 1,000 tons. This trend underscores gold’s continued importance as a safe asset in uncertain times.

As central banks worldwide continued to increase their gold reserves in 2024, three countries stood out as the biggest buyers:
These purchases reflect a global effort to diversify reserves and reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar.
Throughout 2024, the technology sector and AI drove stock markets to record highs, yet their impact on the gold market has often been underestimated. Despite this, demand for gold within the tech sector continued to rise, reaching 326.1 tons—a 7% increase compared to 2023.
“Demand for electronics, the dominant category within this sector, was strengthened in 2024 by AI-related applications and a partial recovery in the consumer electronics market after a weak 2023,” stated the World Gold Council.
While this strong demand helped push gold prices higher, supply also increased. According to the World Gold Council, global gold supply rose by 1% in 2024, reaching a new record of 4,974.5 tons.
As of August 31, 2024, Sweden’s Riksbank held 125.7 tons of gold, with a market value of 103.9 billion SEK (significantly higher today). Despite the global trend, the Riksbank has not increased its gold reserves, maintaining that the current level is sufficient.
Heidi Elmér, head of the bank’s gold reserves, stated:
“At the moment, we have an adequate gold reserve,” indicating that there are currently no plans to increase holdings.
While many central banks see gold as a safe haven in an uncertain world, Sweden’s Riksbank has chosen not to follow this trend. The question remains whether this strategy benefits Sweden in the long term, particularly given gold’s historical role as a store of value. Over the past year alone, the value of Riksbanken’s gold reserves has increased by approximately 45%.
What do you think? Should the Riksbank consider increasing its gold reserves to strengthen Sweden’s economic security? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
