Diwali is India’s biggest festival and one of the most important periods of the year for the gold market. But why gold in particular, and what makes the first day so special?
Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is often described as India’s equivalent of our Christmas. It is the festival of light and is celebrated by hundreds of millions of people around the world, including here in Sweden.
This year, the main day, Lakshmi Puja, falls on Sunday 8 November, but the celebrations last for five days. They begin with Dhanteras on 6 November and end with Bhai Dooj on 10 November.
This is what Diwali 2026 looks like, day by day:
The dates follow the Hindu lunisolar calendar and may vary slightly between regions.
Diwali symbolises the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It is also a festival that is very much about prosperity and new beginnings.
At the heart of the celebrations is Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and good fortune. On Dhanteras, it is tradition to buy gold, silver and metal items to welcome prosperity into the home.
For many families, buying gold during Diwali is therefore more than an investment. It is a tradition passed down through generations, a way of showing care and a gift that retains its value.
India is the world’s second-largest consumer of gold after China, and autumn is traditionally the strongest period of the year. The October–December quarter is structurally India’s most important for gold buying, and Dhanteras accounts for one of the biggest sales days of the year.
At the same time, the market is changing. According to the World Gold Council, gold bars and gold coins accounted for 52 percent of India’s domestic gold demand in the first quarter of 2026, the highest share since 2013. In other words, more and more people are choosing pure investment gold over jewellery.
In the second quarter, volumes fell to 131 tonnes, but the value of gold purchases reached a record level for a second quarter. Ahead of this year’s festival, the World Gold Council reports that seasonal demand has started to gather pace as the market enters the festive and wedding season.
Ahead of the Festival of Lights, we have two gold bars in our range that are made specifically for Diwali.
5 gram Perth Mint Lakshmi Gold Bar
The bar features Lakshmi seated on a lotus flower, with coins flowing from a vessel as a symbol of abundance. It is made by The Perth Mint in 99.99 percent pure gold and is delivered in tamper-evident packaging with an individual serial number.

Both bars work just as well as an investment in physical gold as they do as a personal Diwali gift.
Looking for something smaller and elegant? Then PAMP Rosa is a lovely new addition. The bar is available from us in two sizes: 2.5 grams and 5 grams.
The design shows a rose in full bloom, with two buds about to open among the leaves. The bars are made by the Swiss refiner PAMP in 99.99 percent pure gold, and the packaging also serves as a signed certificate of authenticity.
The compact format makes them an affordable way to get started with physical gold, or a gift that really stands out.
