Is your gold really safe from rust and discoloration? We explain what applies to different gold alloys – and how to keep your gold in top condition.

Gold is one of the few metals that does not rust or corrode – but there are exceptions. What you need to know depends on the type of gold and what it has been mixed with.

Why Doesn’t Gold Rust?

Unlike metals like iron and copper – which easily react with oxygen and moisture – gold is a so-called noble metal. Silver also counts, but gold is significantly less reactive.

This means that pure gold (24 karats) is chemically stable and remains shiny year after year without discoloring or being attacked by the environment. That’s why it’s used not only in jewelry but also in electronics and space technology.

But Can Gold Ever Rust?

Pure gold does not rust, but the gold we usually wear as jewelry is rarely completely pure. Jewelry in 18k or 14k is made of alloys – a mixture of gold and other metals like copper, nickel or silver. These metals can react with oxygen, sweat or chemicals and cause:

  • discoloration
  • red spots
  • dull surface or “tarnish”

Gold in alloy form can therefore discolor – but that is not the same as gold rusting.

Do Gold-Plated Jewelry Items Rust?

Yes, gold-plated jewelry can rust or discolor since it is a thin layer of gold on top of another metal, often cheaper metals like iron or copper. When the gold layer wears off, the metal underneath can react with air and moisture.

Four Tips to Keep Your Gold Jewelry Looking Great

To minimize the risk of discoloration on gold alloys, here are 4 good recommendations:

  1. Remove jewelry when showering, bathing, or working out
    2. Avoid perfume, chlorine, and cleaning agents
    3. Store in an airtight box or pouch
    4. Clean regularly with mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush

Gold vs. Other Metals – What Actually Rusts?

Below you’ll find how various common metals behave:

  • Does zinc rust? No, but it can corrode slowly under extreme conditions.
  • Does aluminum rust? No, but it forms a white oxide coating that protects the metal.
  • Does brass rust? It doesn’t rust but can discolor (patinate) over time.
  • Does steel rust? Yes, steel contains iron, which rusts quickly in moisture.
  • Does copper rust? Not in the classic sense, but it forms a green patina.
  • Does silver rust? No, but it is highly prone to discoloration (black oxide).
