Gold is reaching new heights as the conflict between India and Pakistan intensifies, raising concerns about a potential nuclear confrontation.
On April 22, 2025, a deadly attack occurred in Pahalgam, Kashmir, where 26 civilians – primarily Hindu tourists – lost their lives. India attributed the attack to Pakistan-based groups and responded on May 6 with “Operation Sindoor” – targeted air and missile strikes on nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, including cities such as Bahawalpur and Muzaffarabad.
Pakistan reported 26 civilian deaths and 46 injuries, including women and children, and described the strikes as an “act of open war.” In retaliation, Pakistan claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets and launched its own counterattacks, further escalating the situation.
In the shadow of these developments, gold surged more than 2.7% to $3,400 per ounce and reached 1,057 SEK per gram – the highest level in two weeks.
This rise reflects investors’ move towards safe-haven assets amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.
When two nuclear powers edge closer to armed conflict, the unease spreads far beyond the immediate region. And every time this happens – whether it involves North Korea, Iran, or Russia – the same sequence unfolds:
Exactly what we’re seeing now.
Gold may be a metal – but it often acts as a barometer of global stability. When gold is climbing, it rarely means that all is well.
Right now, many signs suggest that the India–Pakistan conflict could become more than “a local border dispute.” Several experts warn that a full-scale confrontation cannot be ruled out – which is one reason gold has once again taken center stage.
For investors, this is a reminder of gold’s role as a safe haven in uncertain times. Including gold in your investment strategy may help protect your capital against geopolitical risk.
