Have you considered buying a larger amount of gold – but wondered if there’s a legal limit? The answer might surprise you.

The short version: no – there’s no limit. But there are important tax, trade and storage rules you should be aware of when investing in physical gold.

No legal limits – you’re free to own as much gold as you want

There are no legal restrictions on how much gold a private individual is allowed to own in Sweden. You are free to buy and hold as much physical gold as you wish – whether it’s in the form of jewellery, bars or coins.

This applies regardless of whether you buy gold in a store, at auction, or online through platforms like tavex.se.

Things to consider when buying large amounts of gold

Even though there’s no upper limit, there are practical and tax-related aspects to consider – especially when investing larger sums in gold:

  • Storage – Make sure your gold is stored securely, either in a home safe or a bank deposit box.
  • Insurance – Check with your insurance company that your gold is covered by your home insurance.
  • Documentation – Always keep receipts and certificates, especially for investment-grade gold.

Do you pay tax when selling gold?

Yes – even if you’re free to own any amount of gold, certain tax rules apply when you sell.

  • Capital gains tax: If you sell gold at a profit, it is treated as a capital gain and taxed at 30%.
  • VAT exemption: Investment gold (e.g., high-purity bars over 1 gram or approved gold coins) is exempt from VAT, according to Swedish Tax Agency.
  • Jewellery and scrap gold: Selling second-hand gold jewellery may be subject to different tax rules, especially if you sell it regularly or as a business. Read more about gold taxation here.

How much physical gold do Swedes actually own?

There are no official figures, but the interest in physical gold has increased sharply in recent years – especially during times of inflation and financial uncertainty.

Many see gold as a complement to stocks and funds, or as a long-term store of value.
Worth noting: Sweden’s central bank, Sveriges Riksbank, owns approximately 125 tonnes of gold.

Final thoughts: Own as much gold as you like – but do it wisely

There are no legal limits to how much gold you can own in Sweden.
But that doesn’t mean you should buy without a plan.

Buying larger amounts of gold requires forethought:
Where will you store it? How will you protect it from theft? What happens when you want to sell – and how does it affect your tax declaration?

Making smart choices – such as documenting your purchases, insuring your assets and understanding the tax rules – ensures that your gold investment remains the safe haven you intended it to be.
