Danske Bank is encouraging private customers to consider gold investments as a small part of their portfolio, marking a shift that has caught investors’ attention.

Over the past year, both the gold price and investor interest have risen sharply, and now one of the Nordic region’s largest banks is taking an unusual step. Danske Bank in Denmark is, for the first time, recommending that private customers allocate a portion of their savings to gold. This is widely seen as a sign that the precious metal is increasingly being recognized as a portfolio diversifier.

Danske Bank’s New View on Gold

Traditionally, major banks have been cautious about highlighting physical commodities in their investment advice. However, in early 2026, Danske Bank made a clear departure from this approach. According to the bank’s chief strategist, customers are now encouraged to consider allocating up to approximately five percent of their portfolio to gold as part of a more robust investment strategy.

The bank’s advisors can now also raise gold in client meetings as a way to broaden investment strategies beyond traditional stocks and bonds. Danske Bank does not offer its own gold products, but instead points to examples where gold exposure can be gained through investment funds focused on precious metals and mining stocks.

Why the Bank Is Changing Its Investment Advice

There are several reasons why both banks and investors are paying closer attention to gold:

  • Geopolitical tensions and macroeconomic uncertainty are driving demand for assets that can withstand market downturns.
  • Inflation and interest rate changes affect how traditional portfolios perform.
  • The rising gold price has made the metal more visible to private investors.
  • Gold can serve as a complement to help spread risk in a diversified portfolio.

Advice When Investing in Gold

Including gold in a savings strategy is not a one-size-fits-all solution. The appropriate level of exposure to precious metals depends on individual goals, risk tolerance, and investment horizon. Some common considerations include:

  • Gold is often viewed as a “safe haven” during periods of financial market uncertainty.
  • Gold is typically used for diversification rather than pure return.
  • The price of gold can be volatile, especially in the short term.

How Much Gold Is Appropriate?

Danske Bank mentions up to around 5% of a portfolio as a guideline for gold investments — a level often cited by investment strategists as a way to balance a broad and diversified portfolio.

Ray Dalio, founder of one of the world’s largest hedge funds, Bridgewater Associates, goes even further and recommends that investors allocate around 15% of their portfolio to gold.

Tavex offers a wide range of physical gold, including classic gold bars and gold coins, as an option for those who want to include precious metals in their investment strategy.
