Are you planning to travel with gold – jewellery, bars, or coins? Here’s everything you need to know about bringing gold to and from Sweden.

Why are there rules when travelling with gold?

Gold is considered a valuable and highly liquid asset, which is why specific regulations apply at border crossings to prevent money laundering and illegal trade. In Sweden, investment gold that meets EU standards is treated as a form of cash equivalent at the border.

Whether you plan to travel with gold jewellery, coins, or bars, it’s important to understand the current rules before you go.

Travelling with gold to Sweden

When bringing gold into Sweden from a country outside the EU, certain rules apply.

If the gold qualifies as investment gold – meaning it meets EU purity and weight requirements – it can be imported free of customs duties and VAT, provided it is not intended for commercial purposes. This makes it simple for travellers who have purchased investment gold abroad to bring it home, as long as receipts and documentation are available to prove that the gold is indeed investment gold and not part of a commercial trade.

If the total value of your gold – or other assets regarded as cash or equivalent – is €10,000 or more, you must declare it to Swedish Customs (Tullverket) before crossing the border. The declaration can be submitted online through Tullverket’s e-service or completed in person at the airport or land border checkpoint.

If your gold does not qualify as investment gold – for example, jewellery of lower purity or collector’s coins – other rules or charges may apply. Always check the requirements in advance to avoid delays or additional costs when entering Sweden.

Travelling with gold from Sweden

If you plan to take gold out of Sweden to another country, here’s what you should know:

For travel within the EU, there is no common EU limit on how much gold you can carry, but each country may have its own rules. It is therefore wise to verify the regulations in your destination country – especially if you are bringing large amounts of investment gold or gold jewellery.

For travel to or from countries outside the EU, the same rule applies as for cash: if the value of your gold reaches or exceeds €10,000, you must declare it to Swedish Customs before departure.

You should also be able to prove ownership of the gold and confirm that it is not intended for trade, to avoid misunderstandings or further inspection at the border. Some countries also require an export declaration or special import permit for gold, so make sure to check both Swedish and foreign regulations in advance.

What type of gold is covered by these rules?

When it comes to rules on “cash or equivalent assets,” certain types of gold are specifically defined:

  • Gold coins with a minimum purity of 90%.
  • Gold bars, ingots, or lumps with a minimum purity of 99.5%.

Ordinary gold jewellery (such as rings or necklaces) usually falls under different rules and doesn’t always require declaration – though it may still be subject to inspection if its total value is high.

Five things to check before travelling with gold

Before you travel, make sure you’ve considered the following:

  1. Does your gold qualify as investment gold (bars/coins)?
  2. What is the total value in euros or kronor?
  3. Does the value reach or exceed €10,000 for travel to or from a non-EU country?
  4. Do you have proof of purchase or ownership (receipt, certificate)?
  5. Have you checked the regulations in both the destination and departure country?

Frequently asked questions about travelling with gold

Do I always need to declare gold?
No. If the gold is for personal use, the trip is within the EU, and the value is below €10,000, you usually do not need to declare it – provided it meets the requirements for investment gold.

Do I have to pay customs duty or VAT?
No, if the gold is classified as investment gold and the conditions are met. Private import of investment gold into Sweden is customs and VAT exempt.

What happens if I fail to declare when required?
Failure to declare may result in the gold being seized by Swedish Customs, and you may face fines or legal penalties under Swedish law.
