Which currency should you bring to Turkey?
Turkey is a beautiful and warm country – perfect for a family holiday. For some years now, they have talked about the potential dangers of going away in these areas. Tourist interest has not diminished because of it, prices have become even more attractive which encourages people to travel there. Summer holidays can be organized at the hotel and you can spend time on the beach, enjoy the sun, snorkel and do other water activities. It is worth mentioning that that two of the seven World wonders are in Turkey: The Temple of Artemis in Ephesus and the Mausoleum in Halicarnassus.
Which currency should you bring to Turkey?
We often meet people who say it is more worth buying exotic currencies abroad, and that it is more profitable to travel with currencies like the euro or the US dollar. You can also pay by card and not think about switching to cash. This article will show you the pros and cons of the above-mentioned possibilities.
In order for us to be able to compare these options, we have calculated how much is the approximate overall cost for two.
Purchase of Turkish lira in Sweden
The currency in Turkey is Turkish lira (TRY), which can be purchased at Tavex at any time. At the time of writing the article (26-06-2019 14.00) the exchange rate is 1.78483.
The cost of a holiday trip has already been calculated above, but it is always worth taking more money with you in case of unexpected expenses. Cash is King and in Turkey we recommend to pay everything with cash. Of course, you should also have a bankcard with you just in case, but please remember – there are some fees, maybe even unexpected fees. Plus paying with cash, you can easily keep an eye on your budget. We do not recommend that you travel to Turkey with the Swedish currency, as switching can be difficult. Instead come to one of 5 Tavex offices and we will give you best rates in Stockholm.
Purchases of euros or dollars in Sweden.
Many tourists are also buying euros and/or US dollars before traveling to Turkey. It is known that in Sweden there are less margins on main currencies like EURO and DOLLAR. For 1,000 SEK, you will receive $101 for US dollars at today’s rate of 9.9095 (June 26, 2019). With the same amount of SEK you would get almost 95 EUR.
We recommend to buy Liras, euros and dollars already in Sweden, before traveling to have a hassle-free travel. In Turkey you might have hard time finding a currency exchange place with good prices. Since Turkey is very attractive tourist location, the margins are quite high.
In many places in Turkey you can pay also with Eur and Usd. We recommend to buy 80% of liras and 20% of main currencies just in case.
