We have previously highlighted the importance of keeping cash at home. Now, MSB has updated its guidelines – but what do they really mean?

Cash is essential if a crisis or war comes to Sweden.

This is the message in the brochure now being sent to all households on behalf of the government. The content is provided by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB).

If a payment method is disrupted, it can become difficult to buy food, medicine, or fuel. Therefore, it is important to have several payment alternatives.

Calculate the cost for your family for at least one week’s time and keep cash in small denominations at home to use if digital payment methods do not work.

Tavex gives you extra benefits when you use cash!

At Tavex AB, we value our customers and are excited to launch our new cash bonus program, which rewards you for choosing cash as your payment method.

We understand that cash can be the most convenient option for some customers, and that’s why we want to make it even more advantageous. Through our bonus system, which is valid until further notice, you have the opportunity to earn extra on your transactions.

Here’s what you can get:

  • 2% better price when you sell precious metals to Tavex and choose to receive the payment in Swedish cash!

Please note that the cash bonus program is limited, and cash payouts are subject to terms, Tavex’s internal regulations, and applicable laws and regulations.

Make sure you can pay in multiple ways

An important part of preparedness is being able to pay in different ways. In your household, you can:

  • Have accounts in different banks, cards from different networks (such as Visa and Mastercard), and access to mobile payment services (like Swish).
  • Have multiple ways to connect to the internet.
  • Have various options for electronic identification (such as BankID and security tokens for your bank).
  • Keep cash in small denominations sufficient for one week’s worth of expenses.
  • Use cash occasionally to maintain your preparedness and stay familiar with how cash looks and works.
  • Keep track of your payment cards and PIN codes in case contactless payments with cards and mobile (by tapping on a card terminal) stop working.

You can read more about this on MSB’s website.

This is what the MSB brochure says about cash

Money

Being able to pay in different ways strengthens your preparedness.

Try to use cash occasionally. Good to have:

  • Cash in different denominations for at least one week.
  • Other payment solutions like bank cards and digital services.

Different advantages of cash

Even though other payment methods have become much more common, cash still plays an important role in society.

  • It is the only payment method accessible to everyone.
  • No special technology like apps, payment cards, or electronic ID is needed to pay.
  • You can withdraw and store an amount at home for preparedness.
  • Cash is central bank money, meaning its value is guaranteed by the state.
  • No intermediaries are required to make payments with cash.

Is gold and silver good during war?

MSB does not have specific recommendations on gold or silver, but historically, gold and silver have been valuable assets during times of war and uncertainty. Here are four reasons why:

  1. Security and Stability: Precious metals like gold and silver have maintained their value throughout history, regardless of economic or political conditions. When currencies lose value or banks become unstable, gold and silver are seen as reliable stores of value.
  2. Protection Against Inflation: During wars and conflicts, inflation can rise sharply, reducing the purchasing power of traditional currencies. Gold and silver tend to increase in value when inflation rises, providing protection against loss of purchasing power.
  3. High Liquidity: Both gold and silver can easily be sold or exchanged for goods and services almost anywhere in the world, making them valuable assets during crises.
  4. Physical Ownership: In uncertain times, digital and electronic assets can be hard to access or insecure. Having physical gold and silver means having something concrete to rely on, which provides increased security.

Advantages of gold

  • Higher Value per Gram: Easier to store and transport large values.
  • Global Acceptance: Easy to exchange for currencies or goods.
  • Stability: Historically less price volatile than other commodities and cryptocurrencies, especially during crises.

Advantages of silver

  • Practical for Smaller Transactions: Suitable for everyday exchanges.
  • Affordable Price: Silver is often more accessible for regular people because it is cheaper than gold. Since silver is more affordable than, for example, gold, it may be easier to acquire a reserve of silver to cope with everyday life during war.
  • Industrial Demand: Even during wartime, industrial needs for silver continue, especially in military equipment and electronics, which can sustain demand and support the price.

Things to consider during an evacuation

According to MSB, you may need to leave an area quickly in case of threats such as military attack, natural disasters, or hazardous spills. You will be informed about evacuation via the Emergency Alert System (VMA). Listen to Sveriges Radio P4 and follow the authorities’ instructions.

If you are unable to manage on your own, you can receive help with evacuation, as well as emergency accommodation and food at the location you arrive at.

Good things to bring during an evacuation

Plan what you need to take with you if you must leave your home quickly, for a shorter or longer period. Here are some tips:

  • Food and water for a few days.
  • ID documents, bank cards, and cash.
  • Medicines and aids, such as a hearing aid.
  • A radio powered by batteries, solar cells, or crank.
  • Warm clothing, rainwear, and a change of clothes.
  • Hygiene items.
  • Mobile phone and charger.
  • Map, compass.
  • Important information on paper, such as phone numbers and insurance details.
