Researchers at CERN have managed to transform lead into gold – but does that mean gold is about to lose its value? Hardly. Tavex explains why.
Turning lead into gold has been a dream of mankind since the Middle Ages. Alchemists across Europe tried to create gold from base metals, without success. Now – several hundred years later – scientists at CERN’s particle accelerator, located 175 meters underground, have actually done it.
In an experiment conducted within the so-called ALICE project, physicists managed to temporarily create gold atoms by colliding lead nuclei at near light speed. The result wasn’t a gold object, but a short-lived nuclear reaction in which gold did indeed form – if only at the atomic level.

If you’re wondering whether this means gold can now be manufactured industrially – rest easy. This is not a new method to mass-produce precious metals, but rather advanced research at the outer frontier of physics. The process requires immense resources, energy and equipment – and yields only traceable quantities.
Three things to keep in mind:
Gold isn’t valuable because it’s hard to make – it’s valuable because it’s real, stable and rare in nature. Even in our modern world, where almost anything can be recreated, gold is still something we have to discover, mine and store.

That’s also why central banks around the world continue buying gold as a reliable reserve – no matter what happens in the global economy. And it’s why private individuals return to gold as a safe asset in uncertain times.
Do you want to own something that can’t be created by technology – only by time, pressure and natural forces?
